I’ve been interested this month to follow the petition that has been launched on the to improve coeliac disease diagnosis.
Coeliac UK are urging the Government to find the half million people in the UK at risk of serious damage to their health from undiagnosed coeliac disease. They are campaigning for a target for diagnosis to be included in the Quality and Outcomes Framework of the GP contract.
So, will diagnosed coeliacs be backing the campaign? Over 1,000 people have already pledged their support by ‘signing’ their name via the petitions.number10.gov.uk website. You can add yours to the list by clicking here
While I have experienced first-hand just how difficult it is to get a diagnosis, I am still not sure whether setting a target for GPs is the solution. Are we just opening the door to mis-diagnosis? I guess only time will tell but in the meantime, I will be watching developments closely
