It’s only just February and the shops are full of Valentine’s goodies. A quick trip to M&S already finds me wading through chocolates, champagne and all things heart-shaped.
As someone who’s been married for over 25 years, I rarely bother with Valentine’s presents or meals out at restaurants (where the prices are hiked up by 50% especially). But the one thing I always do is send a card to my husband – it’s a nice reminder to appreciate each other more.
Unfortunately it also reminds me just how many holidays and celebrations revolve around food – Valentine’s truffles, Christmas cake, Easter eggs, even hot dogs on Bonfire night. It’s a veritable minefield. So I was thrilled when I discovered that the Midland Hotel in Manchester offers a gluten-free afternoon tea. It will feel like such a treat to have small (gluten-free) sandwiches, scones and cakes brought out on a silver platter and should more than make up for missing out on a couple of cheap chocolates. I can’t wait.
