Novac Djokavic - coeliac or gluten intolerant?
Novac Djokavic - coeliac or gluten intolerant?
Posted on the 07/07/2011 by

We read this article in the Evening Standard about Novac Djokavic with interest. There’s been some confusion in the press recently about whether he suffers with coeliac disease, gluten intolerance or avoids gluten for other reasons. Whichever diet he is following, he’s clearly on top form with his tennis!

The great thing about all the press surrounding Djokavic is that it raises the profile of coeliac disease, which will hopefully lead to more awareness of the condition and an improvement in the rates of diagnosis.

Interestingly, the article states that ‘experts concur that gluten-free eating performs wonders for one group of people only: those with coeliac disease’. Until fairly recently this was the case amongst the medical community, despite the fact that certain consumers (who do not have coeliac disease) reported an improvement in symptoms of other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).  However, there is now some research showing that for certain consumers, who aren’t diagnosed with coeliac disease, avoiding gluten in the diet leads to symptom improvement. The studies to date aren’t conclusive and further research needs to be undertaken to better understand this finding, however, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this matter. Do you follow a gluten-free diet for other reasons than coeliac disease? Leave your comments below.

I have Crohn's disease and IBS, and find that wheat triggers me most. Although I'm okay with barley I follow a mostly gluten free diet as it is more common to find products marked that way. I have also found a few that are marked wheat free, or 'may contain traces of wheat'.

I was told several years ago that I had the intolerance to wheat, cows dairy products and tomatoes as well as tea and red wine. I was sceptical at first but time proved it to be right. If I have any wheat my IBS is really bad and dairy products give me terrible cattarh. I can stomach a little goats or sheeps cheese but not too much at a time. GF foods for the most part make life easier.
