Hi Sunday,

Thanks for your post. It is important that individuals with coeliac disease strictly follow a gluten-free diet to alleviate any symptoms and help protect against long-term health complications, which it sounds as though you are doing. However, there may be times when people accidentally consume some gluten. The important thing to do is to review what you think it is that might have contained the gluten, avoid in the future and then continue to follow a gluten-free diet. There is no recommended way of getting the gluten out of your system any faster.

Best wishes,

Mel

Lisa wanted to know do rice cripies have gluten in please?

The best place to check whether a product is suitable or not is the Coeliac UK Food and Drink Directory which lists over 11,000 products that are suitable. Some breakfast cereals contain an ingredient called barley malt extract. Foods that contain barley malt extract in smaller amounts can be eaten by most people with coeliac disease but these products have to be labelled as containing barley. The breakfast cereals listed in the Coeliac UK Food and Drink Directory have been tested for the overall level of gluten in the product and are suitable for people with coeliac disease.

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,

Mel

I am still unclear about oats (for GF + wheat-free); I sometimes see products listed as GF/WF which do have oats. Has it been concluded that oats are safe? I don't want to resort to 'trial & error'

Hi Mel

I am going through a bit of trial/error to see what foods I'm having reactions to as the doctor won't test me for coeliac disease. I always flush when I eat cheese, chocolate, butter and wine... I honestly thought that everybody flushed when they ate cheese and chocolate, but wine is my newest discovery... I've always flushed but never really drank that much wine.

Is there some type of food I should be avoiding that links all these foods together? My first obvious thought was diary, but I'm thrown by the wine.

Thanks,

Vee
