A gluten free children's party
Posted on the 13/07/2011 by
Children’s parties can be a nightmare...organising entertainment, stuffing party bags, making sure that no one is left out and everyone is playing along nicely! For parents or guardians with children who suffer food allergies or intolerances though, these issues are only half the battle. With serious dietary conditions such as coeliac disease, parents not only have the worry of their child’s plate coming into contact with others, they also have to arrange a special gluten free birthday cake.
Tamsin Faulkner is one of the many mums in this situation. Back in January, Tamsin won the opportunity to have a gluten free meal prepared by DS-gluten free’s cookery expert, Gill when she entered our competition in DS Discover Magazine. With Tamsin’s daughter Elowen approaching five years old and her dreams of her very own princess-inspired birthday bash, Gill couldn’t wait to help Tamsin make Elowen’s day a birthday to remember. Tamsin was diagnosed herself with coeliac disease when she was 17, she says "Elowen is great about her condition and understands what foods she should avoid. But kids’ parties can be a real nightmare for coeliacs with biscuits, cake and sandwiches tempting us, so often to be on the safe side, I’ll bring food for Elowen to eat which isn’t much fun. Her fifth birthday, however, was the party of her dreams, thanks to DS. It was a fabulous prize to win and the adults present, who were not accustomed to gluten free food, could not believe the quality. All of them stated that you could not taste the difference between the DS-gluten free party food, and 'normal' food."

A whole host of gluten free goodies were prepared and taken along on the day for Elowen and her friends. Tasty treats included crispy Chicken Goujons made with our sister brand Trufree’s crackers, gluten free "Pizza faces", Hot Dogs using the DS-gluten free Lunch Rolls and Sandwiches using the DS-gluten free Brown and White Ciabatta Rolls.
Of course no party would be the same without a cake, Gill used our sister brand, Glutafin's gluten free Multipurpose White Mix to make the sponge for Elowen’s gluten free birthday cake. Elowen commented "I loved the chicken and I had great fun making pizza faces with my friends. My yummy Cinderella birthday cake looked just like the gluten ones in the shops. I dressed up as Cinderella and Gill was my fairy godmother. Thank you DS.” Readers can visit the Glutafin website to view their gluten free sponge recipe.
DS-gluten free hopes that Elowen and her family and friends enjoyed the day as much as we did. If you have a children’s party coming up and you‘d like some gluten free advice feel free to comment below.
