Don’t panic!
If you have recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease then there is no need to panic as there is a significant amount of support in the UK that can ensure you continue to live a normal life and manage the condition to your benefit!

There is lots of information online to help you appreciate what the condition involves and you will no doubt have already been introduced to much of this information by the team of experts who diagnosed you. If you would like more information or even just a refresher then please use the links below to find out more.

What is it?
Coeliac disease is a condition brought on by an intolerance to gluten which is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Some people with coeliac disease react to oats too - and can be treated by excluding gluten from the diet.

Inflammation and Villi
The result of this intolerance is the body not being able to properly absorb nutrients within food. An inflammation is caused to Villi – tiny projections that line the gut and are flattened when inflamed – which in turn damage the gut.

What are the implications?
The lack of nutrients gained by people with undiagnosed coeliac disease causes wide ranging problems generally focused around stomach and bowel symptoms as well as resultant nutritional deficiencies.

However, in particular cases and where untreated for long periods the condition can result in other sometimes more serious problems such as osteoporosis, infertility and cancer of the gut.

What should I look out for?
Again there are wide ranging symptoms but if you are at all effected by tiredness, anaemia, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, weight loss, vomiting and mouth ulcers then this may be an indication that you have coeliac disease. It is also common for growth to be stunted in children such is the impact that the condition can have on a child's overall development.

How do I make it better?
The coeliac condition is life long and so can never be eradicated but providing you exclude gluten from your diet you will feel 100% better in a short space of time and remain so for the rest of your life. Although you will need to pay closer attention to what you eat, there are an ever increasing range of Gluten Free products available in the market place that will help you to maintain a very normal life.

How do I follow a Gluten Free diet?
